We arrived by train yesterday around 4PM with not enough time to get to the Falls, although I did try! This morning I attempted again to walk there at sunrise, which was beautiful to see, yet discovered there is no viewing spot on this side without paying. So I await our group tour this morning. I am laughing at the sense of patience I am being teased with for my view of this magnificent water energy dancer! In the meantime I have listened to it and watched its mist rising above the trees. Last night we again had no electricity, as the rolling brownout is following us. We sat for a while by candlelight enjoying the stars of the southern hemisphere. I do not recognize much. This is an unusual place with its history of fame with the English Empire and the wildlife that strolls about. We were greeted by vermit monkeys, as they love to come and enjoy high tea! Later in the afternoon we saw a group of warthogs pass by on the lawn, and along the path we came upon a group of 5 male Cape Buffalo. After spending 4 days in vehicles being so cautious of our actions it was bizarre to be walking with them so close.
Our trip on the train was phenomenal, as it was rich with contrast. The train is opulence, elegance, romance and a feast, while the countryside is a mixture of barren, wilderness, farmland, poverty, friendly faces, children running to wave or to beg for things. We saw giraffe, waterbuck, lots of baboons, cattle, goat, sheep, birds and one elephant from the train. Yesterday morning we did an early morning game drive on part of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. It is said to be the size of Belgium. We were treated to Cape Buffalo which we had not seen yet and is one of the big 5, so we still need to see a leopard to complete our list. We also saw 2 mother elephants with their young, jackal, sable and wildboar at a waterhole. The guide believes that the lions were near where all the buzzards were sitting in trees, but he can not go into that area with his vehicle.
This morning we are going to see the Falls and the town, then have the afternoon free. Some of the group are doing a walk with the lions, and I am thinking of doing the "Flying Fox", a zipline across the gorge, or just enjoying some time by the pool. Will post more later.
