10/9/07 Kichaka Lodge
Wake up call was at 5:15 with our drive starting at 5:45. Rainy cool about 50 degrees.
We checked back with the cheetah and she still had her catch. Apparently the hyena hadn’t found her. We saw Zebra, Blazebuck, Redbuck and Frank our driver was determined to find some elephant. Sure enough towards the end we saw a herd. He drove us right up into the grove with them – 3 young males a couple of females and a 9 month old. We got so close, maybe 6-8 ft. They are amazing creatures!
Back for breakfast and a hot tub, some internet and a nap. Our afternoon drive was with the rain. I almost didn’t go but it was well worth it. We began the drive with zebra, bucks and then I spotted an elephant. It was a moody guy named “Stumpy” as his tail is cut off. He is a very spirited young bull and gave us quite a show, with ears flapping, facing us directly and even trumpeted a couple of times. We followed him quite a while and he led us to 4 Rhinos. It was an interesting dance of animal energy as the two acknowledged, tested out and then danced around one another.
We moved on after watching the Rhino for a while and Frank found the elephant herd on the move. He pulled the vehicle up so they would cross our path. We were treated to an elephant parade! First came one of the females and she paused and showed us her power and authority (although she is not the matriarch) . Then came the 9 mos old, 2 males, then the matriarach. She is an amazing energy and paused to make her power known. She was followed by 2 males who just strolled on by and then pulling up the rear in his own way came Stumpy. After that we found 3 giraffe, watched them for a bit and got to see one open up his stride to a most beautiful canter. So graceful!
Back at the lodge we had Milo (an ovaltine like drink) by the fire and then the electricity went out for almost 2 hours. We enjoyed the fire, candle light and kerosene lanterns. Dinner was fabulous, as Blessed (our chef0 plated everything warm with no electricity! Fish, bubbling sweet potatoe and veggies. Yum. The electricity came on so he was able to make the most delicious chocolate lava cakes! Divine.
The staff treated us to singing 3 songs in Xhosa. It was magical. Blessed be Blessed.
